A little bit about Tyler Kido

My name is Tyler Kido and I am a brand new English teacher at La Grande High School. I'm from Oakland, California and graduated from EOU both with my undegrad, as well as my masters. This fall will be my first year teaching straight out of graduate school and I could not be happier. I'm very excited to be here and look forward to my time teaching here at La Grande High School, as well as learn how to communicate more efficiently with the outlaying community.

A fun story about Tricia Tucker

My husband was zapped by lightning last Saturday while trying to install fence around our garden plot. We had sat on our porch watching the storm pass. He thought that it had moved on far enough that he was ok to go back to fencing. The next thing I knew a bolt struck about a mile above our house in a cherry orchard. I heard him yell and he came running back to the house.

He said that right before it hit he felt the hair stand up on the back of his neck. He went to hit the deck and as he went down the bolt struck and he saw electricity arc between his fingertips and the fence. Luck or some higher being was with him because he had no marks on his body and is perfectly ok!

PS I have beautiful children!

A funny story about Ruth

Our 1 1/2 year old silver lab had 10 unplanned puppies just in time for Christmas last year. Some how we ended up holding on to 2 puppies for friends and family totaling our household number of four dogs.
When I  return home I am usually welcome with a surprise. These are pictures of home.

A fun story about Lena

This June my husband an I will be celebrating 8 years of marriage. Well its not as long as some amazing couples, but they have certainly been adventurous. The best story, that still tops all was our Epic week away to the coast for our honeymoon. We were the touristy couple, always looking for new adventures. Well we found some amazing restaurants, great tourist spots, light houses etc. Needless to say the highlight of our trip was our choice to go deep sea fishing. Well.... a long family history of red hair, pale skin and car sickness came back to haunt me. We had booked a 5 hour deep sea fishing trip. Right before we took off the captain informed the participants that the waters were unusually rough that day, and they had thought about canceling the trip....but they had a full group and decided to go ahead with the tour.

Well a fun thought turned into a nightmare as I happened to become sea sick, not 15 minutes in, and remained sea sick for the last 4 hours and 45 minutes....The best part was it didn't end when we got to shore...no it was so bad that it lasted until the next morning. :( Well after a day of rest, the remainder of our time away was spent off of the water and on dry land....note to self, no more deep sea fishing trips!

a fun story about

I love family dinner time with my kids. It's a great chance to feed our face and connect after a busy day. One night we sit down to eat and my youngest sits on the chair next to me. Glancing down, I notice Avrey has taken off her cowgirl boots to reveal....a pair of purple mittens on her feet instead of socks, complete with the little thumb part of the mitten sticking off of her tiny ankle! "Avrey! Where are your socks?!"

"I ran out of clean socks," she reasoned.

Ok. That's one resourceful kid that always makes me laugh!

I was busy one day during my prep, my phone goes off it's my daughter she asks what am I doing? I said work. Are you in class I ask she says I'm opting out OPTING OUT!!! I say. She goes yeah some Descartes guy. So she sends me a copy of the lesson. I look it over and say this easy. And she exclaims Dad you're 58 Masters degrees you should know this!!!! And know she was right!

A Fun Story About Dalton

I had a student (6th grader) who came up to me and told me that "somebody put a cheese stick in my desk." After him staring at me awkwardly for about 15 seconds, I asked him what he would like me to do for him.He then continued to stare for about 10 more seconds to which I told him to throw it away. He left to electives without throwing it away. I then remembered that I had cheese sticks in the fridge and proceeded to place two more into his desk. I was distracted grading when students returned from electives and suddenly I hear, "Oh God!" and looked up to see him holding three cheese sticks in his hand. I love my job.

A fun story about Kindi

Last winter I went to Orlando, Florida.

My family and I went to visit my younger sister who was living there at the time. She was working at Disney World and was able to show us all the secret ins and outs!

A Fun Story About Holly Wagner

Last year I went to Tahoe over summer break with my family. My husband's family has a cabin so we try to take advantage of that. We took our bikes and a bike trailer for our youngest and decided to bike in to the town. What we thought was going to be a nice easy bike ride turned into a much longer all day adventure. My husband and I loved it, our kids.... not so much.

I guess that is more of a "WHAT?!?" kind of story than funny. Maybe someday I will laugh at it!

a fun story about Kevin

As a small child I once crawled into the bowels of an abandoned chicken house which was stuffed with old junk. I became disoriented and ended up tumbling down through a gap in the boards and landed in the garden of an adjoining house. I looked up and saw a boy my age sitting beside a fish pond. I walked to him and peered over his shoulder. There in the water was an enormous gold fish the size of a bicycle. It had sad eyes.

My husband and I took a trip to Punto Arenas, Chile to hike the Torres del Paine circuit.

When we arrive near the bottom of the world, neither of our bags arrived with us.

We met some travelers who were on their way home from an REI sponsord trek.

They gave us their gear so that we could complete the trek.

A fun story about Cindy Patrick

Last summer I traveled the Nes Perz Trail with my husband and some friends.  It was a blast and so informative.  One of the craziest things for us were all the beware of bear signs at all of the campgrounds.  Usually it was posted on a near by tree but sometimes it was on the picnic tables stating....DO NOT LEAVE FOOD OUT...BEARS!!

A fun story about Alannah Jones

This year was my first year of student teaching. During a lecture this past spring, my students were quietly laughing, but when I'd turn around and ask them what they were laughing about, they'd say "nothing." Finally, I turned to one of my students that I can usually trust, and asked him what was up. He said, "Um, Ms Jones....your belt is undone..." Who knows why they thought that was the funniest thing in the world, but I'll tell you that I always check my belt buckle now!!

Desmos

I attended a couple of your sessions while you were at NCTIES in Raleigh.  I am a history teacher and wanted to know more about how to use Desmos in my American History class.  Last week I was able to glean lots of great info, but now it is all starting to run together.

I am very interested in using Desmos for something more than Math, however, I am not able to find any sources to show me how to do this.  Can you help me?  Thank you for your time.

A fun story about Renee Klein

Hello - my name is Renee Klein, and I am from Mohawk HS. I know you've never heard of it - it is a tiny rural schoolnoutside Eugene. I teach language arts, social studies, special education, and competitive robotics. I currently have 12 middle school VEX IQ teams, 1 elementary VEX IQ team, and 3 high school VEX EDR teams. Robots robots robots! 💖 We are doing phenomenally well this year - I have 3 teams who qualified for Nationals this year, so we are off to Iowa in April for competition! Woo!

My take aways

I love the resources and Talk Move folder provided. Great resources and information that ties directly into a district level PD that we are running with elementary teachers!

This email/blog post is a great and easy way to start sharing with students and I see multiple opportunities to get students sharing in the classroom. That will be great motivation for students.

K20 and OETC data base--great stuff!

My toolbox is growing. :)

Compliance within engagment

I want to expand on this idea of what is compliance in an engaged classroom. I feel Admin need to understand this to not stifle teacher creativity.

Take Away

K20 strategies for some possibly "fresh" ideas.

Engaged students may not be the "ideal" student of compliance that some teachers seek. Engagement is students pushing the boundaries, asking questions, adapting lessons to their needs/wants, and the teacher working with the students. Considering the concept of student vs teacher centered classroom allows you to reflect on your classroom philosophy.

Session take-away towards implementation

A co-peer coach and I have created a Google Classroom where we plan to invite the teachers at our school as participants. We will post links and ideas there for specific content at specific grade levels so teachers can search tags and find ideas to make their classrooms more engaging and 21st-century learning. I plan to include links to the resources I learned in this session as well.

The K-20 learn database is a great site for engagement activities that can extend from Pre-K to Professional Learning sessions.

My Takeaway...

I learned about Quizlet Live, and the K20 class grouping resource. A+!

My Take Away Towards Implementation

I have a staff member that has been wanting to implement blogging with her students. I have a couple of new ideas to bring back to her, such as tagging and creating authors (don't publish until teacher approves).

Quizlet Live

I'm excited to go back and try Quizlet Live. My students love Kahoot but I have to be careful not to play it too often or they get tired of it really quickly. This will give me another great option with the additional group options.

Funny story about Heather Marrs

I am a third grade teacher and EdTech teacher leader in Southern Oregon. I have been teaching for 10 years. I moderate the Oregon EdChat which you can find at #OrEdChat Sunday nights at 8:30pm. I have a husband, Ryan, and two kids, Madelyn and Jordan.

Having small children gives you lots of funny stories....
The other night my three year old did not eat her dinner so she was not allowed to eat a treat later in the evening. At some point she got very quiet so I went looking for her and she was hiding in her room with her mouth full of something. It turns out she found her older brother's snowman art project from school the month before that had mini marshmallows glued on. She had pulled the marshmallows off the art project and ate them. #supermom #creative

Howdy!

Sitting here at AcceleratED hoping for that illuminating moment when I know the trip from Grants Pass was well worth the drive through yet another Pac NW rain storm.  The title of this session, Tools Helping Shift Compliant Students to Engaged Students, seems promising.  Discussing with a colleague the importance of finding ways to get those students who may be compliant, but who are artful at taking cognitive siestas while appearing to be engaged.  Hopeful I go away with some tricks!
